"What is Radon, and why should I be concerned?"

  • Radon is an inert and naturally occurring gas coming from the ground below. It cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted. It can only be detected and measured with special devices. It is created from the natural breakdown of Uranium in the soil found throughout the U.S. The threat of Radon gas is chonic damage to lung tissue leading to lung cancer.

  • Radon gas is driven into houses through various ways and every home offers different pathways. It most commonly gets access into the house by the houses natural vacuum effect on the soil caused by various natural and man made effects. It is estimated that 70% of Iowa homes are elevated above the EPA's recommended Radon gas limit measurement of 4 picocuries per liter.

  • Radon gas is a Class A carcinogen (cancer causer). It is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United states behind smoking. The EPA estimates 21,000 deaths occur in the U.S. per year due to Radon gas.  Once Radon gas enters a building, it is the Radon decay products  that are responsible for creating different types of radiation known to damage lung tissue leading to cancer formations. This process naturally and spontaneously occurs due to the breakdown of Radon.

  • Like a lot of poor health contributors, the realization of the effects of Radon gas on humans is growing. Why might you ask. It can be directly related to lung cancer research by health studies conducted and technology, which was not available until recent years.

  • With all of this said, the bottom line is Radon gas issues CAN be resolved. The EPA limit is 4 picocuries per liter and most houses can be reduced to 2 picocuries per liter or less. There is no time like the present, schedule your test today.
